High Impact Practices (HIPs) are research-based instructional and course design practices that increase student engagement and success. When used intentionally, HIPs can help bridge the gaps in student success across student populations, particularly among traditionally underserved student populations (Kuh & O’Donnell, 2013).

Eight Key Elements of HIPs (Kuep & Young, 2018; Kuh & O’Donnell, 2013):

  1. Appropriately high expectations
  2. Significant investment of time and effort
  3. Substantive interactions with faculty and peers
  4. Experiences with diversity
  5. Frequent, timely, and constructive feedback
  6. Reflective and integrative learning practices
  7. Real-world applications
  8. Demonstration of learning competence

HIPs can be implemented in your classroom in several ways. The video and resources linked below demonstrate some of the ways that HIPs can be implemented in fully online courses.
