You change the settings for discussion forums so that you have to manually click the circle next to a post to mark it as “read.” This may be a helpful way to track which posts you've read and responded to more accurately.
To adjust the settings for marking posts as read:

Click on Discussions on the left side of the course

Click on the gear in the upper right corner of the screen

Check the box next to “Manually mark posts as read.” To return to the original settings, uncheck this box
